What is Legacy Martial Arts all about? This post is a great introduction to what Legacy Martial Arts stands for and has to offer members of the LMA family.

Welcome to atalegacy.com!

This is the official site of Legacy Martial Arts, and is the primary communication tool for our school. Legacy Martial Arts (LMA) is committed to the best in life skills training through the martial arts. We focus on developing and maintaining a positive attitude, a strong sense of self-discipline, and respect for our juniors and seniors.

At Legacy Martial Arts, we all teach and learn from each other, and we have a responsibility to help each other be the best we can be. We have high expectations for behavior, performance, and effort. We simply expect the best effort to be made, at all times, in pursuit of the goals set by each individual – a goal we set is a goal we get.

We expect great behavior, and we are committed to teach students what that means. It starts with respect for ourselves, and respect for others. We expect students to constantly develop better abilities to listen to others, participate in training and discussions, pay attention to instruction, and behave in a way that is appropriate for the activity she or he is engaged in. Because our school trains martial arts students of all ages and abilities, we have the opportunity for our older and more experienced students to role model these behavioral expectations to our younger and newer students. You will frequently hear the reminder to live up to the standards of a Black Belt – the standard for a lifetime of martial arts success.

In terms of performance, we teach students how to set goals, work to accomplish them, and challenge themselves to repeat the cycle. Every belt level has two stages, and the first goal we set for students is to earn her or his first rank promotion by perfecting the skills established for her or his entry rank, the White Belt. Students graduate ranks by testing on her or his current rank, and they earn their promotion by showing a commitment to performance at the current level. Once a student has earned her or his Black Belt, the training does not stop. The Black Belt has degrees of competency and it is, in a sense, the beginning of a lifetime of martial arts training and not an end goal in itself.

At Legacy Martial Arts, effort is the basic expectation. We believe that being engaged and participating in the program is the only way to benefit from what it has to offer. Each student has different abilities, and we recognize that. Because martial arts is a discipline established to challenge the individual, it is a perfect opportunity to teach and learn on an individual level. For example, say a student cannot do a push-up when she or her enrolls at LMA. An obvious goal would be to learn how to do 10 great push-ups by the end of the month. Maybe a student has a hard time sitting still and listening for 5 minutes. The obvious goal? Develop the ability to accomplish that by the end of the month. Once a goal is achieved, the challenge to extend it – 20 push-ups or 10 minutes of quiet attention – is the logical progression. It does not happen overnight, and it cannot happen without effort, but if a student is committed to learning, we are committed to teaching her or him how to set, meet, and expand her or his goals for being a better martial artist. We find that excellence in the martial arts always transfers to excellence in life, and effort is the first step.

LMA is not fight club or gladiator training academy. It is an opportunity to train in life skills that are beneficial at all ages, and to learn the poise and confidence that will set our students on the path to success and a lifetime of physical and mental well-being.
